What you will be able to do#
- Use concise milestones before and during implementation.
- Communicate a bug or approach change without discarding sound work.
- Adapt communication to remote coding and permitted debugging tools.
Use six concise milestones#
Speak when the listener needs your model or when the model changes. Leave ordinary syntax and keystrokes silent.
- Restate the objective and the contract you will solve.
- Compare the baseline with the candidate improvement.
- State the invariant or meaning of stored state.
- Name the next implementation step before a non-obvious block.
- Acknowledge a discovered bug and the smallest repair.
- Summarize the tests, complexity, and remaining tradeoff.
An annotated short dialogue#
Candidate: 'We need the fewest unit-cost moves, so I will use BFS. The queue holds cells in nondecreasing distance.' This states the method and its invariant.
Candidate: 'I noticed I mark visited after dequeue, which lets two parents enqueue the same cell. I will move that update to enqueue and rerun the duplicate-path case.' This exposes the bug and a bounded repair.
Candidate: 'The normal case and unreachable exit now match expectation. Time is O(rows × columns) because each open cell enters the queue once.' This closes with evidence rather than 'done.'
Too much, too little, and useful#
Too much: narrating each variable declaration, bracket, and increment leaves no room to think and hides the decisions. Too little: silently replacing the approach or debugging for several minutes makes the reasoning impossible to follow. Useful: state the contract, tradeoff, invariant, next non-obvious step, discovered mismatch, and test result.
Adapt for remote coding#
Confirm whether the interviewer can see the same editor and test output. Keep the relevant function and failing case visible, and say when you are switching between prompt, code, and tests. If audio or screen sharing fails, state what is unavailable and ask how the interviewer wants to continue.
Use a debugger only when permitted#
Confirm the tool policy before the round. When a debugger is allowed, name the hypothesis and the state you will inspect before setting a breakpoint. Report the first divergence and return to the invariant; do not replace reasoning with aimless stepping.
Permission in an Engineering Foundry practice session does not imply permission in an employer interview.
Explain queue-based traversal#
A good explanation connects representation, invariant, and updates: adjacency supplies neighbors; the queue holds the next frontier in distance order; visited is set on enqueue so every node receives one owner and enters once; each neighbor gets distance one greater than its parent.
Worked example#
Repair visited timing without restarting
A grid BFS enqueues the same cell from two parents because visited is marked after dequeue.
- State the invariant: every enqueued cell already has its minimum distance and will enter the queue once.
- Name the mismatch: marking after dequeue violates the one-entry claim.
- Move the mark to the enqueue operation rather than rewriting the traversal.
- Rerun the converging-path case and one ordinary path.
Outcome: The listener can follow the cause, repair, and regression evidence without hearing every code edit.
Apply the idea#
Explain a queue-based graph traversal to an interviewer in five sentences. Include the representation, queue invariant, visited timing, termination, and complexity.
Reveal the worked answer
I represent each node by its adjacency list. The queue contains discovered nodes in nondecreasing edge distance from the source set. I mark a neighbor visited when I enqueue it so no second parent adds it again. The traversal ends when the queue is empty or the requested target is first reached under unit-cost edges. Time is O(V + E) and auxiliary space is O(V), assuming adjacency enumeration visits each edge a constant number of times.
Choose the next session#
Use one public question and speak only at the six decision milestones; pause normally between them.
