A group divides partition ownership#
Within one Kafka-style consumer group, partitions are assigned across members so the group processes in parallel. Four partitions allow at most four active partition owners at an instant; extra members wait idle.
Four partitions constrain group parallelism
Add or remove group members to see partition ownership rebalance.
| Partition | Owner |
|---|---|
| P0 | Consumer A |
| P1 | Consumer B |
| P2 | Consumer A |
| P3 | Consumer B |
Membership changes require reassignment - a rebalance - which may interrupt processing and can repeat work near commit boundaries.
